Oh my goodness the market at Winterfeldplatz is simply amazing!
I heard of this market almost from the first day I arrived in Berlin. I have been meaning to go, but the search for my new place and the cold and the fact that everything was new to me and I had so many other things to explore pushed this back. Plus, I thought, it is just a market, good vegetables and meat but I have to plan some recipes or it won’t be worth the trip.
Then the other day I found a post praising a stall at the Winterfeldplatz Market with amazing grilled fish, Saturday was supposed to be sunny so I planned to go.
The smell of grilled chicken welcomed us before the market was even in sight. So many stalls, fruit and vegetables of course but also meat, charcuterie, fish, eggs, cheese and bread. And also flower and plants and clothes and jewelry.
But what left me astonished was the amount of stalls that were selling food ready to be eaten, almost everybody was having lunch or nibbling on something.
Hubby and I had a german thing but I forgot its name :( Some sort of thin bread with spinach and cheese, grilled right there in front of us.
Then we continued our exploration and stumbled upon the fish stall we were looking for Steckerlfisch & Co. They grill mackerel, right there in front of you.
Steckerlfisch’s stall was quite busy and the fish was good :) we will be back!
At this point we had waked through barely 1/3 of the market! We continued for a little longer and were again enticed by the smell, this time it was cheese! We got Raclette from a stall selling amazing cheese. They heat the cheese (half of a wheel!) and when it is all bubbly they scrape it down on a piece of warm baguette! Finally they add some spices on top. Oh my! It was yummy! If you get the raclette, skip the parsley topping though, it overkills taking away from the flavor of the cheese (IMHO).
And off we went. We saw a lot of other things we would have liked to get but we were full. We will go back, and we will try the things we missed :) Like the fish soup!
If you are in Berlin on a Saturday, go check out the Winterfeldplatz Market, you won’t be disappointed!
